Site Visits

Providing opportunities for our team to visit project sites—both during construction and after completion—is an important part of our culture. These visits help ensure that everyone at NewSun has the opportunity to see our work firsthand, deepen their understanding of how our projects come together, and stay connected to the communities and landscapes where we operate.

Every summer, the NewSun team gathers in Bend, Oregon for a week of collaborative work, learning, and connection. The time together includes team meetings, project discussions, community engagement, and opportunities to spend time outdoors. These gatherings strengthen relationships across our team and help ensure we stay aligned in our mission and work.

Annual Summer Gathering

We are proud sponsors of the Crooked River Roundup Foundation’s scholarship program that supports students pursuing education in agriculture, ranching, and related fields. We filled a table at the annual Dinner Dance during our 2025 team gathering.

A highlight of our summer gathering is the annual Catan tournament in Jake’s back yard (otherwise known as “the orchard”),

Getting things Built: Local Contractors and Jobs at Cartwright I & II

Construction on Cartwright I began in spring 2025 and was completed in early 2026, alongside the adjacent Cartwright II. The projects use an innovative single-axis tracking system that pivots throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky, producing approximately 20–25% more energy than a traditional fixed-tilt system.

Construction of Cartwright I and II created 250-300 jobs during the 12 month construction phase and four long-term operations and maintenance jobs.

Community Benefits

Our Community Benefits Program is manifestation of our goal to make near-term and long-term investments in the communities and places where we do business. We provide grants, scholarships, and donations, with an emphasis on expanding access to healthcare, the environment, outdoor recreation, education, county fairs, and the arts.

NewSun sponsors the environmental film track at BendFilm each year. This film, “399: Queen of the Tetons” is about the life of the famous Grand Teton grizzly bear. It showcases her battle for survival against human encroachment, climate change, while highlighting her role as a symbol for conservation and coexistence. Learn more about our partnership with BendFilm here.

Twice each year, we reserve the Tin Pan Theater—a 28-seat venue near our office operated by BendFilm—to host a community benefits presentation. We invite friends, partners, and family members to learn more about the impactful work of our nonprofit partners and the community investment initiatives we are proud to support.

Each year, NewSun invites high school seniors from select Oregon counties to write an 800-1200 word essay about how climate change is affecting their community and way of life, including ranching and farming.

NewSun Climate & Ag Scholarship

Since graduating in December, I have been accepted into the university of Nebraska Medical Center’s dental hygiene program and will be starting in the fall. Winning the scholarship after graduating high school has meant so much to me. Not only did it help me further my education, it made me feel supported by a community of people. That feeling is truly invaluable to me.

I knew going into business administration would give me a broad variety of career options, but I never would have thought about the amount of possibilities that I could have with it. With scholarships like this one and others that have supported me, it has made it so much easier to focus on my academics and future endeavors instead of how I will pay for college.

Located in Burns, Oregon, the NewSun Energy Harney District Hospital Specialty Care Clinic provides critical healthcare services to rural Oregon residents at a frontier hospital. Prior to the clinic opening in 2021, residents spent five hours driving round trip for services now available locally. The clinic offers general surgery, vascular surgery, Mohs dermatology procedures, orthopedics, oncology/hematology, and cardiology.

Seattle Times Tour

In May 2025, David Kroman of The Seattle Times visited NewSun project sites in Crook and Lake counties to tour the facilities, speak with our team, and meet with local landowners. His reporting highlighted how partnerships between rural Oregon communities and clean energy providers are helping meet growing electricity demand in the Pacific Northwest. The story was published in August—Seattle hopes to build its future in Oregon’s desert — or blackouts may follow.”

2025 County Fairs

We are proud sponsors of the Harney, Crook, Wasco, Sherman, Deschutes, and Lake county fairs. We purchase animals at 4H / FFA Auctions, contribute to buyer pools, and make add-on donations to ensure every student is rewarded for their hard work.
